Final Preparations for the Chicago Marathon
One Week to Go — Feeling Grateful and Ready for Race Day
Dear Duniyawaalo (People of the World),
In my last update, I shared the excitement of my solo trip and how I began tapering after the Fox Valley 20-Miler. Week 16 has come and gone, and it’s hard to believe there’s just one week left until the big day — my 2024 Chicago Marathon!
Final Long Run: 6 Miles and Ready to Go
I completed my final long run this week — a scaled-back 6-mile run. As I ran, I reflected on the many miles and months of preparation leading up to this moment. It feels surreal to say I’m as ready as possible. With the marathon just around the corner, I’m excited, nervous, and proud all at once.
Family Time and Support
One of the highlights of my week has been spending time with my younger brother and his wife, who are visiting from India. Having them here has brought me great joy, especially as I prepare for such an important moment in my life.
My brother joined me for a walk on Saturday, and he accompanied me again for my final long run, walking while I ran. Sharing this time has been special.
Prioritizing Rest and Recovery
I kept my workouts very light this week as part of my tapering phase. I decided to skip my short run and strength training to give my body extra rest and ensure I was in the best possible shape for race day. My focus now is on recovery, hydration, and mental preparation.
Nutrition and Weight Loss
I followed my healthy eating plan 85% of the time, and I’m happy to report that I lost another 2 pounds, bringing me down to 253 pounds (from my starting weight of 267). Although I hoped to hit 250 by marathon day, I’ll start my carb-loading phase soon, so reaching that weight won’t be possible. Regardless, I’m incredibly proud of losing 14 pounds throughout my training. At 51, I’ve learned that losing weight is more challenging than ever, so I’m focusing on being mindful and maintaining healthy eating habits.
A Special Furry Companion
This week, I’ve also been enjoying the company of our furry guest, LADDOO, who’s staying with us until October 16. Having him around has added a lot of fun and warmth to these final days of marathon prep.
Looking Ahead
With the final long run completed, all that’s left is mentally and physically preparing for the big day on October 13, 2024.
It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for all the love and support I’ve received along the way.
The marathon is just one week away, and I can’t wait to cross that finish line!
