Embracing Gratitude for the Importance of Sidewalks in Our Communities
A Gratitude Journal Entry
Dear Duniyawaalo (People of the World),
Today on this wonderful day as I am walking outside, I am grateful for the gift of sidewalks that have transformed our neighborhoods and made them more accessible and pedestrian-friendly.
Sidewalks are more than mere paths for pedestrians, they are the arteries of our communities. It is in these sidewalks that I have witnessed pure joys of life, whether it is with children creating chalk masterpieces, elders gently treading towards health or neighbors exchanging warm greetings. They serve as an open invitation to engage in physical activity, promoting healthier lifestyles and enabling connections within the community.
These sidewalks that have become so instrumental in my everyday life, are the fruits of the labor of countless construction workers, who are the unsung heroes of our urban landscape. With their diligent planning they have literally paved the way for safer and healthier communities and a more equitable and inclusive environment for us all.
On my own journey of life, sidewalks have played a significant role. They have been my walking and running tracks that have guided my strides as I pound on the pavement in pursuit of a mindful and healthy lifestyle. Sidewalks have offered me a safe and smooth surface making my workouts more enjoyable and less strenuous on my joints. I can’t even begin to imagine having to run on uneven surfaces or dodge traffic on busy streets.
Far beyond promoting physical activity, sidewalks also contribute to the safety of our communities by providing a designated space for pedestrians, thereby reducing the risk of accidents involving cars or other motor vehicles. This is all the more important in residential areas where kids may be walking to school or playing outside, or people strolling with their pets.
Whether it is a leisurely walk to enjoy the beauty of nature or a brisk jog to improve my fitness, sidewalks ensure that I can do so without compromising my safety, and for that I am eternally grateful.
