Dear Duniyawaalo (People of the World),
Today on this wonderful day as I return from my regular weekend run with my running group, I feel an immense sense of gratitude towards my parents who have played a pivotal role in shaping me into the person I am today. Their love, guidance and support have provided the foundation for my growth and instilled in me the values that continue to guide my path.
I will be the first to admit that my mom and dad were not perfect and they did the best they could with what they had at their disposal. Through their words and actions I learned the importance of respect, kindness and what it means to be a decent human being.
The most valuable lesson that my parents taught me was the importance of treating people (especially women) with respect, irrespective of their background, beliefs or circumstances. This emphasis on respect became an integral part of my character that continues to shape all my interactions with others and guide all my decisions.
My mom taught me to be resilient, compassionate and understanding. These qualities have enriched my life and the lives of those around me.
My dad taught me the importance of respecting my elders and heeding their wisdom. Their guidance, wisdom and encouragement has helped me realize that life can be better navigated through honesty, determination and hard work.
Both my parents died young, father at 49 and mom at 59. There are times when I miss their presence, and most importantly I miss their wisdom.
Even though my parents are no longer with me, I strive to honor their legacy by being the best person that I can be by spreading the love, kindness and compassion that they have so generously shared.
