Dear Duniyawaalo (People of the World),
Today on this wonderful day at my home in Chicago, I am filled with immense gratitude for India, my motherland, country of birth and the cradle of my earliest memories. With its ancient wisdom and modern vitality, India has been the bedrock of my values and a guiding light for my character and principles.
The principle of non-violence, which lies at the heart of the Indian ethos, has taught me the profound power of peace. From the ways of Mahatma Gandhi to the teachings of Buddha, non-violence is not just a doctrine for me, but a way of life. It has instilled a belief in me that compassion and understanding should prevail over aggression and conflict. These ideas have deeply influenced my worldview and taught me that peaceful solutions can be found even in the most challenging situations.
From a very early age, I have been taught the value of embracing peace, not just in my actions but also in my thoughts and words. These guiding principles serve as a reminder to seek harmony not just within myself, but also in my interactions with others and the world around me.
Growing up in a diverse country like India, I had the privilege of being exposed to a myriad of languages, religions and customs. This experience fostered in me a spirit of openness and acceptance, encouraging me to celebrate differences rather than fear them. It has imparted in me the ability to accept and respect divergent viewpoints, and the knowledge that diversity is not a cause for discord, but a celebration of our shared humanity. It has also taught me to listen, to truly hear the experiences of others, and to extend a helping hand whenever possible.
All through my life a strong emphasis was placed on showing respect to elders and women, regardless of whether they are related or not. This has taught me the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or status. Such a fundamental value that permeates Indian society, has always shaped my interactions with others.
India’s cultural heritage, with its deep-rooted values and timeless wisdom, has provided me with a compass for navigating the complexities of life and striving to be a better human being, and for that I will always be eternally grateful.
