Dear Duniyawaalo (People of the World),
Today on this wonderful day I am grateful to James Clear for sharing his wisdom, insights and practical strategies on habit formation in his book “Atomic Habits”. It has truly transformed my understanding of habit formation by unraveling the science behind why I do what I do, and how it influences my personal growth.
The four laws of behavior change outlined in the book form the pillars of habit formation. These laws include:
Make it obvious: Set clear cues for your new habit
Make it attractive: Create positive association with the habit
Make it easy: Break down the habit into small, manageable steps
Make it satisfying: Reward yourself for completing the habit
5 years ago, I wanted to lose a considerable amount of weight and improve my physical fitness. I struggled to maintain a consistent workout routine. I applied the laws in my workout, especially around running, as below:
Make it obvious: Placing my workout clothes and shoes by my bed every night. It set me in the right mindset the night before.
Make it attractive: Listening to my favorite music during my runs.
Make it easy: Started by running 100 steps and walking 300 steps and gradually increased my runs and reduced my walks. I made it so easy that I knew I wouldn't fail.
Make it satisfying: I signed up in advance for running races. It gave me so much happiness and satisfaction to cross the finish line.
By applying the principles I have been able to lose 70 pounds and have run three half-marathons and I am preparing for my first marathon with the 2023 Chicago Marathon.
James Clear’s philosophy of “1% better every day” resonated with me at a deeper level. It helped me realize that true progress is gradual, often invisible, and lies in the compounding effect of small, daily improvements. Rather than chasing overnight success, I have come to learn and appreciate the beauty of slow and steady growth.
My gratitude towards James Clear and his book “Atomic Habits” is immense. It has revolutionized the way I approach my day and live my life, instilling in me the belief in the power of daily disciplines. It has inspired me to harness the power of my habits, turning small daily actions into significant long-term outcomes.
